Speaker 1:

Tonight Downey says no to eternity. New members of the Lantern Corps, monday Night Simpsons and we remember Terry Garr and Jerry Taylor. All that and more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight.

Speaker 2:

Comic books, sci-fi, fantasy and more. If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse Tonight, and here's your host, Thomas Townley.

Speaker 1:

Well, hello and welcome to episode 226 of Multiverse. Tonight. I'm, of course, your host, thomas Townley, and it is a rainy day. Here in Kansas. We've gotten several inches over the past couple days. In fact had some basement flooding that imperiled my collectibles in the basement, but everything turned out right. Nothing seriously damaged, luckily. I will say this for long boxes and bagging and boarding your comics, it is a lifesaver. It will save your collection. So be sure to do that. Last night had an odd night. We were sitting in the living room and all of a sudden we heard this meowing and we looked out of the glass and there was a little, you know, maybe six-month-old, one-year-old cat outside just looking at us going help me, help me. So you know we can't have cats here. So did the next best thing we took I took him into my garage and gave him some water and a place to sleep, and this morning we took him over to the kingman county humane society here in town. So hopefully he'll get adopted out. It was a nice cat.

Speaker 1:

Obviously it had been with humans, because it wasn't afraid of me.

Speaker 1:

So hopefully whoever lost it goes and claims it or it gets adopted out. We'll call that my good deed. Maybe that's a good sign. Election day is tomorrow, of course, and you know it's Donald Trump versus Kamala Harris. I don't see a problem here. Let's just say 100% I endorse Kamala Harris Because, frankly, we do not need a second term for Donald Trump. I'm sorry if this offends anyone.

Speaker 1:

I usually try to keep politics out of the podcast, but this is important. So if you're in the United States and you hear this, be sure to go to the polls tomorrow, if you haven't already. And if you're outside the United States and you hear this, be sure to go to the polls tomorrow, if you haven't already. And if you're outside the United States, be sure to hold your breath and hopefully we'll be able to get you that positive result tomorrow. Anyway, let's go on to the Marvel news, and Marvel News begins with Marvel Studios, which has announced three future release dates for upcoming films February 18th 2028,. May 5th. 20 upcoming films February 18th 2028, May 5th 2028, and November 10th 2028. These dates fall. These dates fall after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Cinematic Universe's years-long crossover storyline that began after the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Cinematic Universe's years-long crossover storyline that began after the Infinity Saga wrapped up in 2019. All current storylines in the MCU are leading up to the May 7, 2027 premiere of Avengers Secret Wars. While details about the post-Infinity Saga slate were previously vague, it is now known, before Avengers Endgame, that sequels to popular solo stories like Black Panther and Spider-Man Homecoming are in development, so we have hope. We have no idea what will be put in those slates, but we know it's not Blade. Blade seems to have vanished into the night, so hopefully the Daywalker will come again. Daredevil Born Again has a confirmed release date on Disney+. During New York Comic Con's Marvel panel, Vincent D'Onofrio and Charlie Cox revealed that their MCU series kicks off on March 4, 2025. Off on March 4th 2025.

Speaker 1:

In a recent episode of the On With Kara Swisher podcast, Robert Downey Jr issued a stern warning to Hollywood about the use of AI technology and deepfakes. The Oscar-winning actor expressed his strong opposition to the creation of a digital replica of himself without his consent. Downey, known for his portrayal of Iron man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is confident that Marvel would not use AI to recreate his character, Tony Stark. However, he is concerned about future executives who might want to exploit his likeness without authorization. Downey declared quote I intend to sue all future executives just on spec. Quote I intend to sue all future executives just on spec. He said, emphasizing his intention to take legal action against anyone who signs off on the creation of a Downey digital replica.

Speaker 1:

When asked about his feelings about being digitally recreated, Downey acknowledged that he has had a full emotional life and doesn't have much room for such speculation. He emphasized that he is not worried about Marvel hijacking his character's soul because key decision makers at the company would never do that to him. However, Downey is confronting the future of AI on Broadway through his involvement in the play McNeil, which criticizes corporate giants in the AI space. He expressed concern about individuals who over-identify with this new phase of technology and believed they could manage it with seeking favorable publicity. Currently, Downey is preparing for his return to Marvel, as he will be portraying the villainous Dr Doom starting in Avengers Doomsday in 2026, not as a digital replica of Tony Stark. Well, you know, to each his own. I can see uses for AI actors in the future, but, yeah, I think that should be up to the actor, or at least their representative is going forward.

Speaker 1:

It's kind of like the thing they had where they had Fred Astaire dancing with a broom in a Superbowl commercial and people were outraged about that way, way back in the you know, 20, 30 years ago.

Speaker 1:

So this is just you know that same argument being displayed again. Anyway, let's go to the dc comics news. Batman and Robin won't make their debut in the new DC Universe until the Brave and the Bold, but the dynamic duo are already filling out their Rose Gallery. Dc Studios dropped the new Creature Commandos trailer during its New York Comic Con panel on Saturday, and in it fans got the first look at the shape-shifting mud monster Clayface in the DCU. The footage also revealed a glimpse of a second Batman villain, gotham City crime boss Rupert Thorne, who is tied to the origin of another member of Batman's rogues gallery, the radioactive Dr Phosphorus, voiced by Alan Tudyk. Dc Studios co-chief James Gunn announced that Benjamin Brian Davis will be voicing Rupert Thorne in Creature Commandos, the seven-episode Max Original Adult Admit series written and executive produced by Gunn. The actor who is best known for his role as the gang leader Dutch van der Linde in the Red Dead Redemption video game series also appeared in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol3 and the Gunn-produced the Miracle of Phil and the Belko Experiment. Dc's Creature Commandos, featuring the voices of Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, frank Grillo as Rick Flagg, sr Zoe Chow as Nina Mazursky, indira Varma as the bride, david Harbour as Frankenstein, tudyk as Dr Phosphorus and Sean Gunn as Weasel and GI Robot will stream starting on December 5th on Max.

Speaker 1:

Hbo's upcoming series titled Lanterns has added Kelly MacDonald into its regular cast. Variety reports MacDonald joins Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, who were previously announced as leads in the show. Lanterns follows Jon Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a seasoned lantern, as they investigate a complex murder mystery in the American heartland. Mcdonald portrays Sheriff Carey, a dedicated and protective town sheriff whose resilience shines through despite a challenging past. Now this marks McDonald's return to HBO, after her acclaimed role in Boardwalk Empire, for which she received an Emmy nomination in 2011. She also won an Emmy in 2006 for the television film the Girl in the Cafe, produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios.

Speaker 1:

Lanterns is based on DC's Green Lantern comics. The series was initially intended for HBO Max, but was later shifted to HBO as part of a revised content strategy. Garrett Dillahunt from Fear of the Walking Dead has also joined the cast in a recurring role as William Mason, a charismatic but ruthless cowboy with a hidden agenda. And that brings us to the Geek News begins with Ronald D Moore back in the Sony Pictures TV Studios fold. The prolific creator-showrunner is taking on a high-profile IP for the studio. He has been tapped as writer, exec producer and showrunner of Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios' prime video series, god of War, based on the PlayStation popular ancient mythology-themed game. Moore's involvement with God of War follows the recent exit of the project's original creative team, showrunner-executive producer Rafi Judkins, and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, who had been with the show since its inception two and a half years ago. According to Deadlinecom, they had completed multiple scripts prior to the changeover, which marks a shift in the creative direction of the series. Adaptation God of War is the first major new project for Moore since he returned to Sony TV in June with a new multi-year overall deal. He had left the indie studio in 2020 after a successful 10-year run that yielded two long-running hit series developed and co-created by him Outlander for Starz and For All Mankind for Apple TV+. Four years later, the shows are still going and both have become franchises, spawning upcoming spinoffs Blood of my Blood and Star City respectively. Moore serves as the executive producer on the Mothership series and its offshoots. During his previous Sony TV stint, moore executive produced two other projects that went to series, including Anthology Philip K Dick's Electric Dreams for Prime Video. It was one of several genre series he has worked on, most notably the award-winning Battlestar Galactica for sci-y, which he developed and executive produced.

Speaker 1:

Since its 2005 launch on the PlayStation 2, the God of War franchise from Sony's Cinematica Studio has spawned a total of seven games across four PlayStation consoles. At the center of the story is ex-Spartan warrior Kratos on his perilous journey to exact revenge after Ares, the god Greek of war, killed his loved ones under the deity's influence. After becoming the ruthless god of war himself, kratos finds himself constantly looking for a chance to change his fate. At Santa Monica Studios, creative director Corey Barlog remains the exec producer on the TV series, alongside PlayStation Productions' Asad Kulzblash and Carter Swain, as well as Sony Interactive Entertainment's Herman Holst and Vertigo's Roy Lee. Santa Monica Studios' Jeff Ketchum is the co-executive producer.

Speaker 1:

A Monday night football matchup later this season will feature two familiar characters, bart and Homer Simpson, in a decidedly unfamiliar concept of a live NFL football game. The alternate animated telecast of the December Night Showdown between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Dallas Cowboys will feature a fully immersive Simpsons experience, conveying the actual on-field action. It will be brought to life by writers and voice talent from the long-running Fox animated series, whose characters and library became the property of ESPN parent Disney back in 2019. The setting for the telecast, streaming on Disney Plus and ESPN Plus and on mobile via NFL Plus, will be Adams Stadium in the show's fictional home base of Springfield. Now it will be the second annual Fun Day Football initiative by ESPN, disney and the NFL, following last year's debut edition of In Andy's Bedroom in Pixar's Toy Story franchise. Unlike a year ago, however, strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA will not limit talent participation. Longtime Simpsons voices, hank Azaria, nancy Cartwright, dan Castellaneta, julie Kavner and Yardley Smith will be voicing several of the characters in pre-recorded bits and skits Outside of the live plays. Simpsons producers have written original material to be used during and after the game.

Speaker 1:

The strategic goal of the alternate broadcast is to expand the game's reach. A similar effort the Manning cast has helped grow the audience for the games through two-plus seasons. Homer will be aligned with the Cowboys and Bart with the Bengals and will rally their supporters on who will join them and their respective sidelines throughout the matchup. Lisa Krusty, nelson, milhouse and Ralph will be with Bart, while Carl Barney, lenny and Mo will be with Homer. While Carl Barney, lenny and Mo will be with Homer, aaron Ashley. The special presentation will be available on linear or streaming in more than 145 markets, live and or via replay. Among those, all Latin America, including Mexico and Brazil, the Caribbean, australia, new Zealand, netherlands, sub-saharan Africa and in Canada via TSN. Video on demand will also be available 12 hours after the live broadcast ends. In these and other markets.

Speaker 1:

Now, every participant in the game will appear as a motion-enabled animated player through state-of-the-art tracking technology enabled by NFL's NextGenStats, along with Sony's Beyond Sports with Hawkeye Innovations, optical tracking Viewers will see a rendition of everything that happens in real life at AT&T Stadium. As it happens, marge and Lisa Simpson will be interviewing players during the game and Maggie will fly the SkyCam, while popular characters, show references and aesthetics will bring the real Sunday night with the Simpsons feel. According to a press release, the Simpsons and ESPN animated segments will also incorporate ESPN personalities like Stephen A Smith, peyton and Eli Manning and others, with their segments written by the Simpsons creators, espn studio analysts and hosts. Mina Kims and Dan Orlovsky will provide football strategy discussion with Drew Carter, calling the game action. Kims, orlovsky and Carter will be animated in the style of the Simpsons. The first of its kind, 2023 Toy Story, outing ESPN's first fully animated NFL telecast, won three sports Emmys and delivered the biggest live event to that point on Disney+, based on peak concurrency. So what do you?

Speaker 1:

think of the Simpsons broadcasting the NFL. Considering it's the Bengals and the Cowboys, it might actually make that game entertaining. Go, chiefs. Anyway, let's go on with our dearly departed, shall we? Let's go on with our dearly departed, shall we? First up, terry Garr, the beloved comic actor who scored an Oscar nomination for Sidney Pollock's Tootsie, starring opposite Gene Wilder in Mel Brooks' classic horror spoof Young Frankenstein, and played Richard Dreyfuss' put-upon wife in the Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 79. Her publicist, heidi Schaefer, told the Associated Press that Garr died of multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with back in 1999 and had been struggling with health issues in recent years.

Speaker 1:

Garr got her start with bit parts in a number of 1960 Elvis Presley movies, including Viva, las Vegas and Rustabout, and appeared in the 1964 Annette Funicello romp Pajama Party. She continued to land small roles throughout the decade and also appeared in episodes of classic TV series Star Trek, as a secretary in the popular, almost spin-off 1968 episode of Simon Earth, that Girl, mayberry, rft, it Takes a Thief and Room 222. In the early 70s she reoccurred on the Sonny and Cher Hour and guested on MASH, the Odd Couple, the Bob Newhart Show, barnaby Jones and other popular series. But her breakout came in 1974. She appeared in Francis Ford Coppola's Best Picture Oscar nominee, the Conversation, playing the girlfriend of star Gene Hackman, and later that year landed her most famous role as Inga, the Transylvanian local who becomes the assistant to Gene Wilder's Dr Frederick Frankenstein, if you please, in the smash comedy Young Frankenstein. In the smash comedy Young Frankenstein, serving as Brooke's follow-up to Blazing Saddles, its stellar cast also included Cloris Leachan, marty Feldman, peter Boyle and Gene Hackman in the cameo. Her sweet, somewhat naive and oddly accented character had no shortage of memorable lines. Who would forget? Would you like a roll in the hay? He would have an enormous schwanstucker and put the candle back. The film won critical acclaim and was a huge commercial hit, later becoming resurrected as a Broadway musical. Richard Dreyfuss and Gar would be in Close and Carries of the Third Kind, also in 1977.

Speaker 1:

The mid-70s found Gar doing guest shots on other hit TV shows such as McLeod and Maude, before she co-starred opposite George Burns and John Denver in Carl Reiner's 1977 comedy feature. Oh God. Just weeks later came the release of Close and Cars, steven Spielberg's alien counterfilm, in which she played Ronnie Neary who tried to hold her family together as her husband, obsessed over a shared vision, and ultimately runs off to chase it Close. And Cars of the Third Kind set multiple box office records and became the top-grossing Columbia Pictures movie in history. At that point, garr continued to work in films as the 1980s donned, co-starring in the Big Screen the Black Stallion, coppola's One from the Heart and John Schlesinger's comedy romp Honky Tonk Freeway.

Speaker 1:

But her next role would be among her most famous. Gar played Dustin Hoffman's sordid girlfriend in Tootsie Pollock's Best Picture, oscar-nominated cross-dressing comedy about an outwork actor who lands a plum soap opera job while disguised as a woman. Dorothy Michael became an overnight sensation and hijinks ensue as Hoffman's Michael Dorsey struggles to keep his secret while being courted by clueless older men. Gar's Sandy Lester co-starred in the fictional soap and became Dorsey's lover while he secretly longs for their co-star, julie, played by Jessica Lange, who went on to win the Supporting Actors Oscar over Gar. Also starring were Dabney Colvin Coleman, charles Durning and Bill Murray. The film was an enormous commercial hit, surpassing Close Encounters as Columbia's top grossing film.

Speaker 1:

She also starred with Jackie Gleason and Karl Malden in the Sting 2, and as Michael Keaton's ad-exec wife in the role-reversal comedy Mr Mom, both in 1983. Banned by the nascent filmmaker John Hughes. The latter cast also included Martin Mole and Gillian Jeffrey Tambor and Christopher Lloyd Around. That time Garr began guesting on NBC's versioning talk show Late Night with David Lehrman. Her frequent flirty, faux bickering visits more than two dozen over the show's 11 years were comic gold, with a nearly blushing David Lehrman often barely able to contain his glee. She also appeared in David Lehrman's second annual holiday film festival in 1986, and Laird guested on his follow-up show on CBS, the Late Show with David Lerman, about a half-dozen times from 1993 to 2008. Gar continued to work in movies intelligent into the 2010s, famously recurring as Phoebe's mother on Friends and guest-starring in TV's ER, frasier, sabrina, the Teenage Witch and others, and was a series regular on the short-lived 1995 sitcom Women of the House, playing the press secretary of Suzanne Sugarbaker, who moved to DC to serve out the house term of her late husband. The comedy's last four episodes aired on Lifetime as a two-hour movie. She also had a second career as a voiceover artist on cartoons such as King of the Hill, the Legend of Prince Valiant, dr Katz Professional Therapist, two Scooby-Doo series and has Mary McGinnis on Batman Beyond.

Speaker 1:

Gar was born in a showbiz family on December 11, 1944 in Los Angeles and, through many reference works, lists her hometown as Lakewood, ohio. Her father was Eddie Gar, who worked about two dozen screen credits and worked as a nightclub comic. Her mom was Philip Lind Garr, who was an original rockette at Radio City Music Hall. In Lair had a second career as a costume designer and wardrobe staffer whose credits include the Graduate Walking Tall Young, frankenstein and Hitchcock's final movie Family Plot. Garr racked up more than 150 film and TV credits during her half-century career, alongside 100 appearances of herself on various talkers, game shows, music shows and documentaries. One of her earliest credits was backing a go-go dancer on the legendary TAMI show, filmed at the San Marcos Civic Auditorium in late 1964.

Speaker 1:

The show featured the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones and other acts Gar's autobiography titled Speed Bumps Flooring it Through Hollywood was published in 2005. She was married to John O'Neill for three years in the 90s and adopted a daughter, molly O'Neill Again. Terry Gar was 79 years old and finally, tonight you might not know her name, but you know her work Jerry Taylor, a writer, producer and co-creator of Star Trek Voyager, passed away at the age of 86. Star Trek designer and consultant, michael Okuda shared the news of Taylor's passing via social media, saying Taylor passed away on Thursday, october 24th and then sharing a touching tribute.

Speaker 1:

You can find his full statement below On Instagram. Okuda wrote the world of Star Trek lost one of its giants yesterday with the passing of writer-producer Jerry Taylor. Jerry became a supervising producer on Star Trek, the Next Generation's fourth season, eventually becoming co-exec producer along with Rick Berman and Michael Piller. She brought compassion and humanity to her work and to her Star Trek scripts. Her scripts include the Drumhead, which remains one of Star Trek's most powerful hours. Working for Jerry Taylor was always a delight. She always welcomed ideas and suggestions, even from designers in the art department. She was thoughtful and warm and she always made us feel like we were an important part of her team.

Speaker 1:

Jerry Taylor passed away yesterday, thursday October 24th, at the age of 88. She will be missed. Unquote Now. Jerry Taylor helped bring Star Trek Voyager to the screen alongside Michael Piller and Rick Berman, and ran the writer's room for four years. She was already a part of the Star Trek family after working on Next Generation and she would take over as showrunner for the series' final season, but it was Voyager that she was most synonymous with. Taylor would hand the writers' room to Brandon Braga when she departed the show, and Braga also took to social media to share a tribute to Taylor. On Facebook she wrote Jerry Taylor died.

Speaker 1:

She was a great writer and showrunner and, to me, a cherished mentor. Jerry was generous with her wisdom and her time. She nurtured an entire staff of young writers, which is testament to her patience. I would not have a career without Jerry's intricate guidance. She taught us all so much. Her memory will live on in many ways, but perhaps most of all in the character of Captain Janeway, who reflected the best dimensions of Jerry herself. Jerry Taylor, we are lucky to know you" Now. Over the course of her time as part of the Star Trek franchise, taylor wrote or co-wrote 30 episodes of Star Trek, encompassing the Next Generation Voyager and Deep Space Nine. She also wrote two novels set in the Voyager universe and overall she was the exec producer on 93 episodes of Voyager, and overall she was the exec producer on 93 episodes of Voyager. Outside of Star Trek, taylor also worked on numerous other shows, including Quincy, emi, miami, magnum, pi In the Heat of the Night and Jake and the Fat man.
