Tonight, Clayface Delayed, Alex Ross returns to Marvel, Bob Iger leaves, and remember actress Catherine O'Hara. All then more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight. Welcome to Multiverse Tonight, your source for Geek News. We dissect films, games, comics, and much more, bringing you entitled commentary on Pop Hom. This is Multiverse Tonight. Now here's your host, Thomas Town. Well, hello everyone, and welcome to Multiverse Tonight. And uh, well, it's very spring-like outside. It's in the 70s. Just delightful. Which can't say isn't is out of season for Kansas, because Kansas in uh recent uh decades is you know it kind of warmed up in February. February February. February. There's an R there, you know. Ed R U E. And uh, well last night was the Super Bowl. Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks. Uh was pretty much a foregone conclusion even before the game happened. I you know anyone anyone with eyes could see that. Um the commercials were good-ish. Good, bad, kind of kind of in between, I think. Yeah, the Mandalorian and Groko's Grogu spot was okay. The Minions and Monsters spot was okay, you know. Not really, you know, not really a memorable set of commercials. But anyway, we're not here to talk about commercials, we're here to talk about geek news. So let's start with the DC Comics News. And DC Comics News begins with Warner Brothers, which has adjusted the release of two films, uh, two dates for its upcoming for two of its upcoming films. That's uh there'll be Practical Magic 2 and DC's Clayface movie. Now Practical Magic 2 will uh now have a release date of September 11th, moved up from September 18th. The date places the highly anticipated female skewing film in the post-Labor Day weekend slot, typically used by Warner Brothers for successful horror and genre pictures like Beelduice Beetlejuice. And it will open against Focus Features remake of Sense and Sensibility. Suzanne Bayer directs from a screenplay by Akiva Goldman and Georgia Pretchett, based on the Book of Magic by Alex Hoffman. Producers are Dennis Danova, Sandra Bullock, and Nicole Kidman, who also stars. The cast includes Kidman, Joy King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Diane Weist, and Stalker Channing. Now, Clayface is now set to debut on October 23rd, a major shift from the original September 11th date. The move is intended to position the suspenseful horror-like film about the Batman antagonist as a Halloween event picture similar to Blackphone 2 and Halloween Kills. Warner Brothers also reserved this date for an untitled event film. On its new date, the James Watkin directed movie will compete with an untitled A24 movie, an untitled Amazon MGM movie, a Black Bear's Wife and Guide directed by Guy Ritchie, and an untitled Neon release. The script is by Mike Flanagan and Jose and Amini, based on the DC character, with uh production by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn, and Pierre Saffron. So uh Clayface is slinking back to a to a Halloween release. I think I think that's good. You know, Clayface is kind of a horror villain, if you will. You know, he didn't mean to become this this villain, but it was kind of forced upon him. So I think that's pretty good. Anyway, let's go on to the Marvel Comics News. And Marvel News begins with Alex Ross, the acclaimed comic book painter, who rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with the electrifying cover celebrator Marvels for Marvel Comics and Kingdom Come for DC. And for a significant part of the current century, however, he's been primarily recognized for his vivid and lush cover art for Marvel. Fans got the full Ross experience again with the release of his widely praised 2022 graphic novel, Fantastic Four Full Circle, which he returned to writing and drawing the interior art. Now, fans won't have to wait long for his next project, an opus that could prove as ambitious and impactful as his classic works. The new title is called Marvel is called Marvel Dimensions, and is being largely kept secret, but is intended to be a comprehensive tour of the classic Marvel universe and a much more expansive narrative. It's described as an experimental work in both art and form, potentially introducing us to 200 new characters or variations of existing ones. Now Ross teasingly tells the Hollywood reporter, quote, it's meant to be as bonkers a ride for the reader as it could possibly be. You're getting one of kind of entertainment, and then it changes on you midstream, and then you're getting a different art style suddenly. And then the format changes within the book itself, a mid-book format change. All these things hopefully sound seem to unify and combine and come back together, but it's meant to be a wild ride that is throwing everything plus the kitchen sink at you. Now the journey begins with a sweeping journey through the the story begins with a sweeping journey through the origins of heroes like Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, and Wolverine, depicted in dramatic, fully painted spreads that initially echo their early stories. This is followed by a dramatic tonal shift as the narrator and their motives are revealed. Abrams Comic Arts notes that, quote, the storylines twist in on themselves, characters behave in unexpected ways, and events ripple across the Marvel universe with growing tensions, unquote. A menesclaying mystery. A full-on 32-page traditional comic book is even embedded in the middle of the narrative, serving as a key plot point. Now Ross has been working on Dimensions for about 18 months, and he explained that the story is a culmination of years of different ideas, including a desire to revisit Marvel character origins similar to how he covered a quartet of DC heroes years ago in large tabloid editions. Quote, I knew I wanted to touch upon Marvel origins in some regard and had thought about that for years. I would think like, oh, it's just going to be repetitive. You've done that kind of thing before. Why would it be new? And this is my way of coming up with a very twisted new way of approaching this, he said. The word dimensions in the title signify significant signifies uh multiple concepts from interior and interpersonal dimensions to in alternate universe dimensions. The estimated 200 new characters or variations are akin to the new superhero persona he introduced in DC's seminal mid-1990s miniseries Kingdom Come. Now Ross's art process for this unusual work uh involves producing about 10 painted pages a month. For Marvel Dimensions, he averaged around eight. Half the book is painted and the air half is executed in pen and ink. Ross found the inking process more challenging and time consuming. Quote, the amount of stuff I was cramming in there was too much. There's too much little finicky detail, the way that I ink something. Turns out it's harder than when I paint something, he admitted. Consistent with his full circle work, Ross is also creating intricate color guides to ensure his colors precisely matches his vision for the book. Now Ross's early works, Kingdom Come and Marvels, captured the fluidity of the comics medium using a Norman Rockwell-esque art style, significantly paving the way for the broader acceptance of painted comic art. These awards, these works earned him numerous Eisners and set an artistic and commercial standard that imitators failed to reach. He theorizes about the continued appeal of his classic work, saying, quote, they both feature a grounded human view, perspective of fantastic elements, and the realism aspect is still effective in the era of films that brings so much of the same material to life. That's my best guess, and I'm lucky that if people still respond to that work from my mid-20s, that they will give the new projects I do a shot. The hardcover scaled to arrive in stores this September with a retail price of$29.99. And with that, let's go on to the Geek News. They've been provided a mix of new game announcements, updates on previously confirmed titles, and immediate surprise launches. Now let's go over some of these uh new reveals. Uh there was the Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered, which is coming to Switch 2. Uh Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is coming to Switch 2, uh June 3rd. There was uh Pragmata for the Switch 2 on April 24th, Monster Hunter Stories 3 Twisted Reflection for the Switch 2 on March 13th. Now upcoming games include Hollow Knight Switch 2 edition, uh February 5th, Super Bob on February 5th, Super Bob Man Collection for Switch and Switch 2 on February 5th, Tokyo Scramble for Switch and Switch 2, February 11th, Paranormous, the Mermaid's Curse for the Switch on February 19th, Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition for Switch 2 on February 24th, Resident Evil Requiem Switch 2 for February 27th, WWE 2K26 for Switch 2, March 13th, and uh India Jones and the Great Circle for Switch 2, May 12th, and uh Digimon Story, Time Stranger for Switch and Switch 2, July 10th, Valheim for Switch 2 sometime in 2026, Turek Origins, switch for switch 2 in fall of 2026, and uh many others. There was also some retro and archive releases, including Cool Borders, Ninja Gaiden 2 on February 5th, Rav Ray and Rav Racer, Arcade Archives 2 on February and February 26th. So uh, you know, lots of lots of play for Nintendo Switch coming soon. Still no word on on any new Zelda or Mar or Mario titles. So uh I guess we're still in a waiting period on that. Anyway, Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, has depart will depart before his contract ends at the end of December 2026. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing anonymous sources that Iger informed associates of his plan to step down as CEO and pull back from daily management ahead of his contract's end date. Sources close to Iger indicated he is ready to move on from the grind of being CEO and was reportedly frustrated by internal conflicts, including the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel in September over on-air comments he made about Charlie Kirk's killer. Disney's board of directors uh met last week at the Burbank headquarters where a vote on the successor happened, and a proxy statement filed last week. Disney's chairman, James Gorman, confirmed the board's exp expects the to name their expect to name a replacement, and uh he did name that replacement, as we'll uh find out in mere moments. Iger, who had previously served as Disney CEO for 15 years, initially retired at the end of 2021 before being brought back in November of 2022 after the board asked then CEO Bob Chopek. In 2025, Iger's total compensation rose 11.5% to 45.8 million, which includes 21 million in dis in Disney stock, 14 million in stock options, 7.25 million in cash, and 2.59 million in other compensation, including$1.85 million for security and over half a million dollars for personal air travel. Now Iger is up for re-election to the board for a one-year term at the virtual annual shareholders meeting scheduled for March 18th, 2026. And a proxy statement, Disney praised Iger's qualifications, knowing his unmatched knowledge of the company and the creative content it produces and an in-depth understanding of fostering innovation through technology and connecting to audiences in our markets around the world. Disney uh has met and is named Josh Diamara as the next CEO with Dana Walden promoted under him. After an extensive two-year search, the Walt Disney Company has selected Josh Damara, uh head of its theme parks and consumer products division to succeed Bob Iger as CEO. The announcement was made this past Tuesday and concludes a highly proof high-proofile succession process. Diamara's appointment was unanimously approved by the 10 board members, including Iger, following the meeting on Monday afternoon. Effective March 18th, the date of Disney's annual meeting, Diamara will officially become CEO, and Bob Iger, who has served nearly two decades in the role, will then transition to senior advisor and member of the board until his retirement on December 31st, 2026. Dana Walden, previously considered Diamara's main competition for the top job, has been promoted to the newly created role of President and Chief Creative Officer, also effective March 18th. Walden currently co-chairs Disney Entertainment and will report directly to Diamara. Now, Bob Iger has praised Diamara, saying that he is an exceptional leader and the right person to become our next CEO. Iger highlighted Diamara's instinctive appreciation of the Disney brand and deep audience understanding and exemplary ability to combine creative with operational excellence. Now, regarding Walden, Iger commented that she is an excellent leader with tremendous respect for the creative community. Given that creativity is paramount to Disney, Iger believes Walden is a wonderful choice for the new leadership role, having accumulated vast knowledge about Disney's business and brands. Diamara is 54 years old and buys the classic Disney Mold with a career at the company dating back to 1998, beginning at Disneyland. His near 30 years on the retail side provides him with a visceral understanding of how families interact with the brand. His prior roles include CFO of Disney Consumer Products Global Licensing, president of Disneyland Resort, and president of Walt Disney World Resort before his promotion in May of 2020 to head the Disney Parks Cruises Consumer Products and Walt Disney Imagineering. He currently oversees a$60 million expansion of Disney's global theme parks. In his own statement, the MRA expressed gratitude to the board, emphasizing that Disney's strength comes from its people and creative excellence. He is eager to honor Disney's remarkable legacy while continuing to innovate, grow, and deliver exceptional value. Now the board, led by Chairman James Gorman, faced immense pressure to execute a flawless succession plan, especially following the controversial tenure of Bob Chopek. Chopek, who took over from Iger in February of 2020, was promoted from the St. Parks Division role that Diamara now holds. Gorman, a noted Hollywood outsider, dedicated significant time to the succession question. Now they initially favored the internal candidate who knew about the encompassing hospitality, technology, film, RD, consumer products, and Diamara was the favored choice as he grew to be the part, the Parks and Experience Division became the largest driver of revenue and prod profits amidst sector-wide struggles in the film and TV business. Now Walden's promotion solidifies her role as a content-focused leader, a critical move that gave the film and TV products fuel to the fuel to the consumer products and gave the TV, the theme park attractions relevant. She joined Disney in 2019, followed by the acquisition of 21st Century Fox, has been instrumental in building out the Disney Plus Hulu streaming services. Her portfolio is expansive, overseeing ABC Entertainment, ABC News, Disney Branded TV, Hulu Originals, FX, and more. So uh this is interesting news. We'll you know we'll hope the best for uh Sir Diamara and uh Walden. Hopefully they'll uh not step into the same quagmire that that uh Chopek fell into. You know, don't want Bob Iger to have to come back for a third time. I'm sure he's he's pr completely worn out by now. Anyway, off to other companies. HBO is narrowing down the launch window for its highly anticipated TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. Casey Blois, chairman CEO of HBO and HBO Max, recently confirmed deadline to deadline.com that the series, which had a general 2027 target, is now slate for an early 2027 premiere. Blois previously mentioned the late 26-27 uh window in a September 2024 interview, noting at the time that, quote, writers are just getting started, it's too soon to talk about air date, unquote. Now the series has been filming in the UK since the summer and has cast its main roles of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the adult cast with John Lithgau and Janet McTear. Uh now production now uh so uh this so now we have early next year. You know that narrows it down, I guess. You know, January, February, March. Somewhere in that time space. So, you know, I guess we'll see Harry Potter soon. Uh the Library of Congress has announced 25 new additions to its national film registry for their cultural, historic, or aesthetic importance to the nation's film heritage. Four documentaries were also selected Ken Burns' Brooklyn Bridge, Nancy Buriski's The Loving Story, George Nyinberg's Say A Men, Somebody, and Dana Tedesco's The Wrecking Crew. With this latest class, the film registry now totals 925 titles. These films will be ear-preserved among the Library of Congress's 2 million moving image collection items, or in coordination with copyright holders and other film archives. Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newland said, quote, quote, when we preserve films, we preserve American culture for generations to come. The selections for the National Film Registry show us that films are instrumental in capturing important parts of our nation's story. Unquote. Stewart highlighted the inclusion of six silent films and noted the strong public support for tiles like The Thing, The Truman Show, and The Incredibles. And uh I have a list here of all the films uh chosen. Let's see if uh my in my thing left some lists them out. Uh 2002's The Hours got in, uh 2010's Inception, and again the Grand Budapest Hotel. So uh you know, quite a wide range of films there that will be saved from you know turning into dust, if you will. Not that anything anymore gets turned into dust. The called favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 is returning once again. Variety has exclusively reported that Rift Tracks and Shout Studios are collaborating on four brand new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, officially titled Mystery Science Theater 3000, the Rift Track Tracks Experiments. Nelson will reprise his role as Mike Nelson, while Murphy will once again voice Tom Servo and Professor Bobo, and Corbett will return as Crow T Robot and Brain Guy. Original series stars Marie Joe Peel will be back as Pearl Forester. Nelson expressed the excitement, saying, quote, getting a chance to revisit MST after all this time has really energized all of us at Rift Tracks. And for my part, hey, I truly did miss standing next to Plastic Puppets. It's been too long, unquote. Rift Trax has launched a Kickstarter campaign, which runs through March 16th to help to fund the new episodes and provide updates to fans. The goal is to raise$20,000 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Rift Tracks, but the episodes are confirmed for production, irregardless of the total raised, which uh now is, I think, just south of$2 million, if I'm right. Uh, the four featured movies will be revealed during the campaign. Uh, production will take place in Minneapolis, the original show's filming location. The new episodes will be released later this year on the Rift Tracks website, and true MC3K fashion. Producers are committed to using the same style of cheap, practical sets and props the original show was famous for. Matt Arlush, uh Associate Vice President of Product Management as Shout Studios, welcomed the partnerships and quote, we're excited to join Feet Forces with Rift Tracks as Mike, Kevin, and Bill return to the Satellite Love for a new chapter of MST3K. This partnership reinforces our dedication to growing valuable entertainment properties by serving their fandoms with high-quality storytelling, unquote. Now the news follows the recent report that original series creator Joel Hodgson sold his joint interest in MST3K to Shot Studio's parent company, Radial Entertainment. Nelson, Corbett, and Murphy have been working under the Rift Tracks banner since 2006 and have riffed over 1,000 short films, blockbusters, low-budget features, and TV shows. They recently hosted live Rift Rift Track screenings. Hodgson previously spearheaded a successful revival with a 2015 Kickstarter that raised 6.3 million. That revival ran for two seasons on Netflix and a 13th season on the Gizmosplex, the show's online streaming platform. Corbett, Murphy, and Peel all participated in a revival, with Peel also serving as a writer. MST3K began in 1988 as a Minneapolis UFO station show. The premise involved a host, uh Hoshen, then Nelson, and two robot sidekicks providing humorous commentary or riffing over classic B movies. The show later moved to Comedy Central and ended its original run on the Sci-Fi Channel in 1999 after 197 episodes. There was also a theatrical film, Mystery Science Theater 3000, a movie, which riffed this Island Earth, which was released back in 1996. And uh I I recommend you know you go and stream that it's a good show. Spielberg's other major awards demonstrate a career of exceptional influence. The Oscars. Uh Spielberg is a two Spielberg now has the Egot and uh for and has is it now a two-time winner for Best Director, Schindler's List, 1993, and Saving Pratt Ryan in 1998, has collected nine nominations in the category, placing him third all-time behind Martin Sorcey and William Weiler. The formal misdemeanor charge, quote, engaging or agreeing to engage in prostitution was filed last month. If convicted, Stern could face six months in jail and a thousand dollar fine. According to online court records, the case was dismissed on Friday in Ventura, California. A representative from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office explained the decision to TMZ, saying, quote, the defendant did what he was supposed to do. The series starring Rachel Bloom as Rosie and Rory Scovile as Alex Zilbitis, explores a married couple's life in parallel universes, one where they had a baby and one where they had not, and the profound impact of that decision. So again, congratulations, man. And finally, tonight, Catherine O'Hara, the celebrate actor known for her Emmy-winning roles in Shits Creek and her winning work in films like Home Alone and Best and Show and Beetlejuice has died at the age of 71. In a 2025 interview with Vrady about the studio, O'Hara reflected on the changes in Hollywood, knowing, quote, It must be a much more nervous business now than in the past. The internet and streaming must have opened up a world of good and horrific possibilities for people.
